The doughnut effect has become one of the main talking points when it comes to Irish town planning.

With retail parks and large shopping centres having taken their places on the outskirts of our urban centres, the accusation is that the life has been sucked out of town centres.

Newstalk Breakfast's Kieran Cuddihy was in Dundalk to speak to traders in the town centre, the local Chamber of Commerce and groups who want to reverse the trend in order to discuss the doughnut effect and its causes:
