Partners could soon be able to share part of their partner’s maternity leave under new plans being considered by government.
Equality Minister Kathleen Lynch says new legislation is being actively worked on which would see fathers being able to take paternity leave out of the mother’s statutory 26 weeks.
There has been opposition to the proposed plans from the National Women’s Council who say that this will eat into a woman’s statutory 26 weeks maternity which isn’t fair. They say that shared maternity leave will only work if paid leave is extended to one year.
However speaking Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Minister Lynch said it was unlikely that maternity leave would be reduced to allow leave for partners:
