The Catholic Diocese of Elphin has called for an end to politicians and political parties gathering at the gates of churches for fund raising - telling the campaigners to take their collections elsewhere.
The root of the issue appears to be a departure from church values from the political actors, with the diocese calling for "common decency" from the parties.
The Irish Independent reports that the diocese was critical of political parties that have “consistently advocated policies and introduced legislation which undermine marriage and the right to life of the unborn" but continue to "turn up outside our church gates, Sunday after Sunday, to ask Mass-goers to fund their activities".
The statement said that “Common decency would suggest that they go and collect somewhere else”.
In our poll today, it seems a majority of you think political parties should stop fundraising outside churches.
However more than 40% of respondents said that they should not stop.
