Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood has announced that is he to become a father at the age of 68.

The rocker and his wife Sally Humphreys, 37 are expecting twins.

He isn’t the only older dad in the land of celebrity, Paul McCartney became a father at 61, Rod Stewart had a new baby at 66, while Rupert Murdoch was 72 when he ventured into fatherhood again.

While closer to home, PJ Mara, Fianna Fáil’s former director of elections, became the latest recruit to the older dad’s club, last June, at the age of 71.

A spokesperson for The Rolling Stones said: "Sally and Ronnie Wood are delighted to announce that they are expecting twins in June 2016. Needless to say, they are thrilled and overjoyed with the wonderful news."

What does the expert say? Child psychologist and regular contributor on Parenting with Moncrieff, David Carey gives his points below:

  • The major impact is the later the age of the parent the younger the child will be when they pass.
  • As far as the relationship goes there isn’t much of a difference.
  • The one major factor - energy - you will have far less energy for your baby, toddler, child. We can’t compare it to grandkids - that's completely different - you get to send them home. Needs of a child are intense.
  • Older people, generally speaking, have had less to do with children - they don’t know what to look for when it comes development.
  • People should sit down and ask themselves - will I provide this child with love, energy and companionship that they will need? If the answer is yes, then have a child.
