The Law Reform Commission wants it to be harder for killers to benefit from their crimes, in areas like insurance or a family home.

There had been calls for the law to be reviewed in the wake of a legal battle between Eamonn Lillis and the family of his late wife Celine Cawley.

Mr Lillis was released from jail earlier this year, after serving a sentence for Ms Cawley's manslaughter in Howth in Dublin in 2008.

He inherited over €1m from the assets he shared with his wife.

The report on prevention of benefit from homicide recommends changes to the laws of succession when someone has been convicted of murder, attempted murder or manslaughter.

Law Reform Commissioner Marie Baker told Newstalk Breakfast there are constitutional rights to consider.
