The happiest people in Ireland are pensioners who live in rural areas.
According to researchers from University College Cork (UCC), people aged over 65 who live outside Dublin and have family and religion as part of their daily life score highest for life satisfaction.
The study involved over 2,500 participants in the European Social Survey and found that levels of income has only a "modest" influence on happiness.
The 2010 data also found that life satisfaction was greater in the younger age group of those under 24 and those over 65.
It also said that companionship is a strong factor in relation to happiness - whether it is a partner, children or social groups.
While religion also played a role, with the survey finding attending religious services on a weekly basis increased happiness in Ireland.
UCC economics lecturer Dr Edel Walsh told Newstalk Breakfast that the study shows that both the young and the old are the happiest - but it is not good news for those in the middle.
