Dublin prices aren't "that out of sync" with the rest of Europe, Newstalks's Shane Coleman has said.

A new survey from neo-bank Bunq has named Dublin as the second most expensive city in Europe to live and work in.

The survey has found it is over three times more expensive to establish a temporary work base in Ireland than the cheapest capitals in Europe.

The only big city more expensive, according to Bunq, is London.

Nowhere cheap

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, presenter Shane Coleman argued that there is "nowhere cheap" across Europe anymore.

"I mean, look, there's no doubt Dublin is expensive," he said.

"I'm not going to sit here and argue it isn't, but more expensive than Copenhagen?

"I was in Copenhagen a couple of years ago and everything was literally twice the price that it is here... maybe accommodation is cheaper."

€5 coffee

The presenter said he visited Helsinki recently for an Ireland game and that while it's not wildly more expensive, but "a little more expensive" than Ireland.

"I think Spain is still relatively cheap but I was in Italy and France in recent years - no cheaper than here," he said.

Mr Coleman exclaimed that he was even charged €5 for a takeaway coffee in Greece.

"My bottom line is, I suppose, there's nowhere cheap anymore in Europe," he said.

"The carafe of wine for eight euro in Greece - that's gone.

"We were paying €25 for bottle of wine in Greece and €30 in Italy.

"Is there anywhere cheap? I don't think there is.

"And I don't think Dublin is cheap by any means. But I'm not sure it's that out of sync."

Fellow presenter, Ciara Kelly, said she wonders about the metrics used in these surveys.

"I think when I go to Spain or to Italy or places in Europe, Dublin is dearer," she said.

"So it's definitely dearer than some places, but is it the second most [in Europe], I don't know.

"Sometimes I wonder about the metrics used in this, because there are some cities in Europe, if you go out in them, you know, drinking and dining and all that, they seem to me to be just as dear as Dublin, if not dearer."

Apples and oranges

She notes that Dublin is expensive for rent and energy.

"I also think these things are apples and oranges," she said.

"The wages in any given city are sort of commensurate with the cost of living in that city and they're different in every city as well.

"And they never measure that."

The two presenters that this survey is probably more relevant if you are working in a role that requires "jumping around Europe".
