Significant rise in the amount of contaminated chicken bought in Ireland

There has been a significant rise in the amount of contaminated chickens bought in Ireland.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, around half of all fresh store-bought chicken here is contaminated with campylobacter.

The Examiner reports that the food poisoning bug thrives in poultry and can cause infections in humans.

There has also been a rise recorded in campylobacter contamination in the UK, with every major retailer failing to meet targets to reduce the bug.

The FSAI says people can prevent the spread of the bacteria by not washing chicken - which only spreads it further - keeping all utensils and hands clean and also by cooking the meat thoroughly, which will kill the bug.

Vincent Carton from Carton Brother’s Manor Farm - Ireland’s largest chicken processor - spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning. He has some advice for people who are preparing chicken in their home:
