The Taoiseach attended a European Council meeting with EU heads of state and government, where a reflection of the European election results was top of the agenda, as was consideration for the likely contender for President of the European Commission – the EU’s executive arm.

The European parliament has put forward a candidate, Jean Claude Juncker, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and chair of the Eurogroup, but this he has been outright rejected by David Cameron and a number of other heads of state.
