Poll shows the prospect of a hung Dáil if snap election is called

A new poll shows the coalition may not be able to return to power if there was a snap election.

The Ipsos/MRBI poll in the Irish Times puts Fine Gael steady on 28%, while Labour is up one to 8%.

That would not be enough to see the Government returned - with Independents and Others up one to 25%, Fianna Fáil unchanged at 20% and Sinn Féin down one to 19%.

Voters who said they would vote for Independents and Others were then given a range of options to choose from.

The Independent Alliance and People Before Profit/Anti Austerity Alliance get 3% each, Renua is on 2%, the Social Democrats on 1% and other groupings are on 1%.

The Green Party is on also on 1%.

The poll found that Independents and Others are particularly strong in Dublin where they account for 32% of voters.

The Irish Times political editor Stephen Collins told Newstalk Breakfast the prospect of a hung Dáil means we are unlikely to see an election before the end of the year.
