The verdict of the Wagatha Christie trial between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy will be handed down at noon today.
The legal battle between the pair came after Rooney publicly accused Vardy of leaking fake stories to the press and sued the fellow footballer’s wife for libel.
Gareth Davies, Breaking News Editor at Daily Telegraph told Newstalk Breakfast this morning that the verdict may be "a bit of an anti-climax compared to the blockbuster trial we had".
“It’s got to be the most anticipated and talked-about trial of the century but, like I said, there won’t be the courtroom drama that we’ve been accustomed to.”
Mrs Justice Steyn, who has presided over the trial, will deliver her judgement remotely so it's unlikely that fans will get a glimpse of Vardy or Rooney's reaction.
The case revolves around a social media post shared by Rooney in October 2019 where she revealed her "sting operation" to expose the person responsible for leaking "false stories" about her private life to the press.
She said she posted fake personal stories on her Instagram, giving access to only Vardy, who she suspected was the perpetrator. Some of those stories appeared in the Sun newspaper in the UK, at which point Rooney felt she'd caught the culprit.
Vardy still denies the allegations and in June 2020 she began the process of suing Rooney for libel.
Capitalising on the trial that has captivated millions, Channel 4 has announced it will produce a drama based on the trial.
