The head of Irish Rail has revealed plans to bring trains directly to Dublin airport for the first time.

It's estimated the upgrade would cost around 300 million Euro and could be built in less than five years.

Once finished it would be capable of carrying three million airport passengers each year - but the idea is still waiting for Government approval.

Environment Correspondent for the Irish Independent, Paul Melia explains how it would work:

Head of Corporate Communications for Irish Rail Barry Kenny spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the plans for a new Dart line for Dublin airport, which will hopefully extend to services outside of Dublin.

Irish Rail says, if it gets the go-ahead, the project would take less than five years to build and could carry three million passengers every year.

Mr Kenny says it's an ambitious plan but it is workable:
