It may never be known exactly what happened to two Irish Irish climbers who died on Mont Blanc in France.
Colm Ennis (37) from Waterford and Peter Britton (55) from south Tipperary died after a fall on the French mountain on Sunday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to their families and French police are investigating.
Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and the European Union. It is 4,810 metres above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world.
The mountain lies in a range called the Graian Alps, between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France.
