A post mortem is due to get underway on the body of a 54-year-old woman who was found dead in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan yesterday.

The man (56) was arrested in the early hours of this morning, after nearly ten hours of negotiations.

Yesterday evening gardaí found the body of the woman in a house at Drumbannonn on the outskirts of the town.

Her sister has become concerned after failing to contact her.

A short time later - a man also carrying a shotgun - entered the Square Bar in the Market Square in the town and ordered staff and customers to leave.

He then baricaded himself in the basement and a tense stand off ensued - involving local gardaí and armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit.

The centre of Baileborough was sealed off and a media blackout put in place - as trained negotiators spoke to the man.

The Garda Press Office requested the media to observe a blackout while they dealt with the situation.

The siege came to an end at around 3am this morning and a man is now being questioned Baiieborough garda station.

Garda technical experts will examine the scene this morning. The services of the state pathologist's office have also been requested.
