People who steal pets could find themselves subject to harsher penalties for doing it.
The Dáil is to consider a motion that would create a distinction between pets and other items of personal property.
It's being brought forward by the Regional Group of TDs, which says a judge must be able to take into account the distress caused to a person who loses their pet.
