Today on the show we are starting our new fitness segment, Lunchtime Live’s Living Room Workout.
Each week, personal trainer Dominic Munnelly, will give our Lunchtime Live listeners a workout plan that they can do at home...
Week 1 - You're new, here's what to do - test your mobility
All movements are made more challenging with muscles that are tight and weak.
When getting started you don't need a HIIT workout or a 10 minunte fat-blasting workout, you need to do what professional athletes do - assess and check your mobility (this is a combination of being stable and flexible).
What's the point in telling you to e.g. run, squat or do a push-up, if you have restrictions in those areas that are making movement painful or impossible.
We want you to get in some daily movement but some may be limited in certain areas and this assessment will show you specifically where.
These simple tests will help you identify where your mobility needs the most work because having poor mobility is like trying to drive a car with the handbrake on.
The assessment is the perfect starting point for someone that's new to taking some daily movement - it's an often overlooked part of exercise that can lead to injuries if left unattended so even if you exercise frequently this might be an area you've been ignoring.
This is a professional approach to helping you get more flexible and stronger in the right areas and it should be a central part of all training programs.
A lack of some form of physical assessment by a coach is, for me, a red flag as to whether you should work with them or not.
Get assessing, stop guessing and let us know how you got on...
