For many years, the burden of contraception has fallen on women - however, some men decide to opt for a vasectomy.
However, there are many myths that surround the procedure.
Vasectomy Ireland spokesperson Doctor John McCormick told Lunchtime Live that around 10% to 15% of Irish couples will choose a vasectomy as a form of contraception.
"The typical man that I see is age 35 to 45, in a relationship, has two or three children already," he said.
"So, that would take up two thirds of the group of people I see, the group that are 40 to 45 there's slightly more of them versus the late 30s.
"But they don't have to have kids, you'll meet men every week that don't have children and they're making a conscious decision not to have children."
