The Travels of Sir John Mandeville has a good claim to having been perhaps the most popular book in Medieval Europe.

It was essentially a guidebook for pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.

The only problem is that Mandeville had never been there. In fact, he probably wasn’t even a real person.
