A trend that seems to be in a lot of movies and tv shows at the moment is projectile vomit. Sometimes it's used gratuitously to make it clear that a show's sensibility is no-holds-barred, other times it’s used to show extreme vulnerability in a character.
Whatever the reason, the viewer has to sit through quite revolting scenes.
