The acclaimed director William Friedkin dies yesterday in Los Angeles. He won Oscars for The French Connection but it was his 1973 film The Exorcist for which he is perhaps best know. This of course was a movie that has a long and controversial reputation in this country, from its editing by the censor’s office in 1974 to it finally being released in an uncut format in 1998.
