At last night’s Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar reportedly said he doesn’t know why Ireland is the only country in Europe with wet pubs still closed, arguing that publicans should be given chance to show they can reopen safely in accordance with the rules. This development comes as new Garda powers are under debate in the Dáil which would give Gardaí the power to immediately shut down any pub found to be in breach of public health guidelines.
