This day in 1959, twelve women became the first recruits of An Garda Síochána. There was restrictions on their height, they had to be unmarried, and crucially, not too good looking. 

Ellen O'Malley Dunlop, Chairperson of the National Women's Council of Ireland attended the celebrations today and she joins to discuss the history of women in Garda ranks and what the force has planned to develop their influence and presence.
