St Brigid's National School in Greystones in Co Wicklow has decided to introduce a gender neutral school uniform policy.

It follows proposals from the students' council.

It will mean girls can wear trousers and boys can wear skirts if they so wish.

So is this a welcome move, and should other schools be taking a leaf out of St Brigid’s National School’s book?  It caused plenty of controversy on the Hard Shoulder with our listeners.

Aoife Neary, Lecturer in Sociology of Education in the School of Education in the University of Limerick joined Ivan to tell him why this a great move, and a sign of societal change.
