A report by mental health charity the Samaritans has revealed that suicide rates in Northern Ireland are at record levels and campaigners are saying that there is now a mental health emergency there.

There are 19 suicides per 100,000 people in the North, while there are 28 suicides per 100,000 men there.

Young people aged between 18-24 in Northern Ireland are also more than twice as likely to take their own lives compared to England and here.

Meanwhile, research carried out by mental health experts has found a direct link between suicidal behaviour and the traumatic events experienced by thousands of people during the troubles.
