The Mother and Baby Homes Commission's  report makes clear Ireland had a “stifling, oppressive and brutally misogynistic culture” towards unmarried mothers and their children,  - that's according to the Children's minister Roderic O'Gorman

The lengthy and long-awaited report highlighted the 'particularly harsh treatment' that women who gave birth outside marriage were subject to.

Anne Rabbitte, the Minister of State at the Department of Children spoke to Jonathan Healy and we also heard from Dr Sarah Anne Buckley Lecturer in history at NUI Galway and historian of child welfare and institutions.
