April 1st which falls on the Saturday of this week is the 100th birthday of the hard border between North and South. It was sprung on a disbelieving population, Nationalist and Unionist alike, many of whom believed it was an April Fool's joke. And it was imposed by the government of the Free State. This development forms a little of the background in the early chapters of Damian's next book.
