In recent weeks, you may have heard mention of the Republic’s population growth – and how for the first time since 1851, our population has surpassed 5 million people. Migration, the Pandemic and more besides have influenced the increase. But historically, Irish census returns are something of a conundrum, with so much valuable information lost in the fires of revolution, literally going up in smoke at the Four Courts in Dublin. However the most detailed census ever was largely lost and destroyed.
