Today, June 18th, marks the anniversary of Sean T. O’Kelly becoming President of Ireland. In a sense, he was Ireland’s first elected President, time in the Áras being transformative for Ireland’s place on the world stage. It was in O’Kelly’s time that Ireland became a ‘Republic’, making him the first recognised head-of-state in a way beyond his predecessor, Douglas Hyde.
