Emmaunel Adebayor was the man of the afternoon for Tottenham as they beat Swanea 3-1 and moved level on points with fourth placed Liverpool.
Adebayor scored twice in a convincing win for time Sherwood’s side. The first came after 35 minutes when Adebayor met a fine, quick cross from Christian Eriksen on the edge of the Swansea six yard box and nodded it low and well away from the grasp of Gerhard Tremmel in the Swansea goal.
Spurs switched to a 4-3-3 formation for today’s game, abandoning the 4-4-2 Sherwood had been employing until now and sacrificing Roberto Soldado for Nacer Chadli. The new formation clearly paid dividends and Eriksen’s presence in the playmaking number 10 role brought a superb performance from the Dane.
Chico Flores turned the ball into his own net on 53 minutes to make it 2-0. Kyle Walker sent the ball across the Swansea goal and Flores, with Chadli lurking nearby, stuck out a leg and doubled the away side’s advantage.
Spurs could have made it 3 a few minutes later when Moussa Dembele drew the wrath of Adebayor for failing to square the ball to him when the striker had an open goal. The Belgian midfielder chose to take on the shot himself and narrowly sent it wide.
Adebayor got his second goal just a minute later. Danny Rose broke down the left and caught Swansea badly outnumbered in their half. Rose squared the ball to Adebayor and the striker maintained his composure, offered a shimmy to draw a premature move from Tremmel and then rolled the ball home.
Wilfried Bony pulled one back for the Swans less than 10 minutes later but with just over 10 minutes left the result was never in any major peril.
The result means Spurs are level on points with Liverpool in fourth, while Swansea stay just 3 points above the relegation places.
