Among the gongs American Hustle and Gravity are up for are the coveted best picture, along with Nebraska, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street.

American Hustle's main star Christian Bale gets a mention in the best actor category, along with Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. Matthew picked up the best actor Golden Globe for the same role at Sunday night's ceremony.

His co-star Jared Leto's turn as HIV positive transgender Rayon won him the best supporting actor Golden Globe and he is also in the running for the Academy Award. He will battle it out with Barkhad Abdi for Captain Philips, Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave, Bradley Cooper for American Hustle and Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street.

The best actress category is one of the most hotly anticipated, with some huge names vying for the golden statue. Competing are Gravity star Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Dame Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep for August: Osage County. This is Meryl's 18th Academy Award nomination - she has won three of the prizes.

Jennifer Lawrence has picked up another Oscar nomination for American Hustle. She received the best actress prize at last year's ceremony and this time is competing in the supporting actress category. Joining her are Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine, Lupita Nyong'o for 12 Years a Slave, Julia Roberts for August: Osage County and June Squibb for Nebraska.

The best director gong will go to either David O. Russell for American Hustle, Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity, Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave or Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street.

The Oscars will take place on Sunday March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Ellen DeGeneres hosting proceedings for the second time. She also did the honours for the 79th Academy Awards in 2007.
