Outstanding performances in 2013 in five film and eight television categories, selected solely by actors’ peers in SAG-AFTRA, were announced from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.
And the star-studded ensemble of American Hustle appears to have won over guild members, taking home the win for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. August: Osage County, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club were also nominated in the category.
Buyers Club was enjoying a big celebration of its own, with Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both taking home their first SAG Awards.
Matthew’s critically-acclaimed portrayal of HIV-positive drug smuggler Ron Woodroof won him Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, while Jared nabbed Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of transgender HIV-positive patient and Ron's unlikely business partner, Rayon, in the Jean-Marc Vallée drama.
Jared dedicated his award to his mother and to victims of the "dreadful disease".
“To the people around the world who are living with HIV-AIDS. I'd like to share it with the Rayons of the world," he said. "To the people who have made a choice to live their lives... as they have chosen to dream it. I'm so proud that I've been able to glimpse the world through your eyes."
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role went to Cate Blanchett for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, while Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role went to Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave.
Breaking Bad was the toast of the television awards, with Bryan Cranston taking home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series while the entire cast won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, beating out Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Downton Abbey.
"What a way to go out in style," Bryan said as he held up the ensemble award.
The period drama had wins of its own, however. Series star Maggie Smith took home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries went to Michael Douglas for his leading role in Behind the Candelabra, opposite co-star and fellow nominee Matt Damon.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries went to Dame Helen Mirren for Phil Spector.
The cast of Modern Family was elated with a win for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, beating out 30 Rock, Arrested Development, The Big Bang Theory and Veep.
Modern Family star Ty Burrell had an additional gong to celebrate after taking the win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ role as Vice President Selina Meyer nailed her the nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Morgan Freeman presented the SAG 50th Life Achievement Award to Rita Moreno, who was honoured for her career achievement and humanitarian accomplishments.
But the star turned the air blue, shocking the audience with her loose-lipped speech.
“I am so f***ing thrilled,” she exclaimed, later adding, “I hope the man with the [censor] button was there.”
