Swedish actress Anita Ekberg, who featured in one of the most famous scenes in film history, has died aged 83.

The BBC reports that she died this morning, having been in hospital since Christmas following a series of illnesses.

Ekberg's most famous role was in Federico Fellini's 1960 classic La Dolce Vita. The images of Ekberg in the Trevi Fountain in Rome are among the most iconic in all of cinema.

The actress and model was born in Malmo in 1931. She was signed to Universal Pictures in the US after being a contestant in a Miss Universe contest in the US, despite not winning the competition.

Some of her other roles including an adaptation of War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda, and a role in Blood Alley alongside John Wayne and Lauren Bacall.

She worked again with Federico Fellini in Boccaccio 70, The Clowns and Intervista - appearing as herself in the two later films.
