The Oscar Pistorius case continues to descend into a fascinating farce as today it emerged that the lead detective on the case, Hilton Botha (pictured), is facing seven charges of attempted murder. Botha appeared in court today but there are reports from South Africa that the South African Police Service will call a press conference for 4pm today to announce his removal from the case.

The prosecution has seen its case fall apart over the past two days of testimony and the news about Botha comes as a further shot to the credibility of their argument. Oscar Pistorius’s lawyer, Barry Roux, spent yesterday and today undermining both the investigators and the investigation, casting serious doubts about the state’s ability to put forward a solid case for premeditated murder.

Roux said, "Your worship... the poor quality of the evidence of investigating officer [Hilton] Botha further exposed the disastrous shortcomings of the State's case."

During the course of his cross examination Roux forced the veteran police officer to admit there was no evidence to contradict Pistorius’s account of events.

Newstalk Lunchtime spoke with South African journalist Kalay Maistry, who has been covering the case, and Maistry gave Jonathan a run down on the key details from the past two days and why suddenly things are starting to look a little better for Pistorius.
