Athlone Town won the League of Ireland First Division title on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Waterford at Athlone Town stadium. Roddy Collins and his team were able to end an almost two decade wait for a return to the top tier for the club, in front of an electric atmosphere.
Philly Gorman scored the crucial goal, converting from the spot after Enda Curran was taken down by Gavin Kavanagh in the 27th minute.
The game finished as a nervy affair, with both sides having chances to score but Athlone hanging on to end the long, long wait.
Waterford are now level with Longford in the playoff spot, on 44 points.
