SSE Airtricity League First Division club Athlone Town have parted ways with manager Adrian Carberry after both parties met on Monday night.

The former Town player has been in charge at the club since December 2019 and took them to an FAI Cup semi-final last year.

An official club statement released on Tuesday said that the decision was made by "mutual agreement" after Monday's meeting.

"The board of Athlone Town AFC can today confirm that it is seeking a new head coach for its men's senior team following Adrian Carberry's departure from the role," read the statement.

"The decision that Adrian should step down from the role he has held since December 2019 was by mutual agreement.

"His departure comes following a meeting between the parties on Monday night to discuss the team's recent league form and on-field performances."

Athlone got off to a brilliant start this season, going unbeaten for the first five matches with four wins and a draw.

However they have only managed two league wins since then while losing nine of their last 14 matches which leaves them sixth in the table and eight points off the promotion play-off places.

"It was agreed that the best option for the team at this point in time was for somebody else to take over the reins, for the remainder of the 2021 season," the statement continued.

"ATAFC would like to put on the record its thanks and appreciation to Adrian for all his hard work, especially when it came to trying to coach a team in the middle of the Covid19 pandemic.

"The club fully acknowledges Adrian's commitment to the position, and his strong desire to return the club to its glory days.

"Unfortunately, from everybody's perspective things did not work out as we all would have liked. The club wishes Adrian, a former player and a local Athlone man, and his family the very best for the future.

"ATAFC will now begin its search for a replacement head coach. The club will make an announcement in due course regarding Adrian's successor."
