Barcelona are planning a major overhaul of their playing squad in the wake of Tuesday night’s 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in their Champions League semi-final.
Rumours in the Catalan press suggest Barcelona president Sandro Rossell will provide €50 million to fund several signings, with more funds to be made available if buyers can be found for David Villa, Alex Song, Alexis Sanchez and, possibly, Cesc Fabregas.
Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club “will make four or five signings” in an effort to “shake up the squad.” Additions to the current first team squad will not come purely from outside the Camp Nous as Bartomeu said they plan to “bring in players from Barca B. There are certain positions that need to be strengthened."
Neymar, football’s most wanted man, remains strongly linked with the Catalan club, but Bartomeu would not be drawn on the possibility of a move being made for the Santos player in the summer.
"The signing of Neymar is not done.
“Barca do have an interest in signing him. If he has not come yet, it is because he has a contract with Santos and we have no news that he wants to leave.”
It is believed Neymar, despite keen interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid, may choose to remain in Brazil until after the 2014 World Cup.
Bartomeu has dismissed any suggestion that Tito Vilanova will not remain as manager. Vilanova came under criticism for waiting until his side were four goals down before making substitutions, however Bartomeu insisted Vilanova, who returned to the dugout less than one month ago following cancer treatment in New York, will be the man in charge next season.
“Tito will continue next year. He has a contract, and we have faith in him. It has been a difficult year for Tito, as a coach and as a person, but despite all this his management has been good,” he told Catalunya Radio.
