American filmmaker Scott P. Harris based his Edinburgh College of Art graduation film on one simple question: “can I find a woman who is specifically attracted to men with red hair”.
The seemingly ridiculous, lighthearted question then took on a life of its own. Harris got such an enthusiastic response – including an award from Creative Scotland - that he was compelled to expand the short film into a full feature about the way the world perceives those gifted with hair of red. It is also grown into an examination “about modern dating and the insecurities that we all face”.
It’s clearly a topic of significant interest to others as well, and Harris managed to make over $12,000 (€9,000) on Kickstarter to complete the project. Now, just under a year later, he’s about to unveil the finished product.
Ireland – as we all know, the spiritual home of ginger-haired people – has of course been chosen to host the premiere of Being Ginger, and what better event than this weekend’s Irish Redhead Convention in Cork? Yes, there is such a thing, and the premiere will take place on August 25th at Camden Fort Meagher.
Can’t make it, or perhaps you’ll feel out of place at a ginger convention because of your hair colour? Harris will also be releasing the documentary online, and you can download a HD copy for around €7 from the official Being Ginger website from tomorrow.
