Last night U.S. TV viewers were given a crash course in Barcelona trivia as 60 Minutes, one of the country’s most widely watched programmes, aired a report on the club and La Masia, the youth academy that produces many of Barcelona’s players.
Much of the report would be previously knowledge for a European audience but the show, crucially, doesn’t miss the point and gives a well informed and structured run down of Barcelona's success and what makes them so successful. There is also a look at the Catalan desire for independence and what role the club plays in that. The documentary includes interviews with Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas, Leo Messi and FC Barcelona president Sandro Rossell.
The dedication of roughly 1/3 of a 60 Minutes show to “soccer” is unprecedented and speaks volumes about the rapidly increasing interest in the game in the U.S.
