Another new Premier League stadium is coming to London.
Premier League leaders Chelsea have been given permission by Hammersmith and Fulham Council to knock the current stadium at Stamford Bridge and build a new ground on the same site.
Chelsea's new stadium will be a 60,000-seat stadium, increasing the capacity from the current ground by over 18,000. It will put the team on a level with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham in terms of stadium capacity and match-day revenue.
The new stadium is to be built by the same architects that designed the Bird's Nest Stadium in Bejing and Allianz Arena in Munich.
The club have three-years to begin work on the site, which will mean the team will be forced to leave the stadium for at least one-season. One solution to the problem, could see Chelsea groundshare with Totteham Hotspur in Wembley as their London rivals go through a similar re-building process at White Hart Lane.
Once the news was confirmed, Chelsea revealed the work will not begin on the site immediately. "The committee decision does not mean that work can begin on site. This is just the latest step, although a significant one, that we have to take before we can commence work, including obtaining various other permissions."
News of the approval by the local council ends a long-running saga for the Premier League giants. Sites at Earl's Court and Battersea Power Station were of interest to the club, but a complete rebuild of Stamford Bridge was seen as the best option.
