Monday's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Brighton is one of the more odd derbies in world football.

Odd in the sense that it's not based on geography like the vast majority of global derbies.

The A23 Derby originated many decades ago. But one player who featured in the fixture is Damien Delaney.

The former Ireland and Crystal Palace defender joined us on Off The Ball and shared his view on the derby as well as a particularly unpleasant - for want of a better word - incident that occurred before one of the head-to-heads.

"Geographically, it's not [a derby]," he admitted.

"But if you ask the Crystal Palace fans, they genuinely disliked the Brighton fans. There was a genuine dislike and it goes back to the '80s - I've heard many different stories."

Poogate

One story from recent years was "poogate" during Delaney's time at Palace. It occurred ahead of the 2013-14 Championship play-off semi-final second leg at the Amex Stadium. Upon arrival in the dressing room, Damien and his Palace colleagues were met with an unexpected, unpleasant and inanimate guest.

"When we got to the changing room, there was a big... someone took a big dump in the middle of the shower area," he recalled.

"And when we went in, [then-Palace] manager Ian Holloway just hit the roof and was just trying to fight some Brighton staff members.

"It got cleaned up - it didn't bother us. But Ollie made a big deal of it because that's what he's like. He wanted to cause a scene.

"He went into the tunnel at 7 o'clock and was trying to fight all the Brighton staff. But we had our headphones on and someone came in and cleaned it up. And that was that.

"But we ended up winning that game anyway. There are some funny stories about how that turd came into being in our changing room."
