Derby County will spend the season battling against relegation as they're to be handed a points deduction by the EFL.

The club managed by Wayne Rooney will be given a 12-point penalty by the EFL following breaches of financial regulations.

In January of 2020, Derby were charged by the football league with irregularities related to the sale of their Pride Park ground to the club's owner, Mel Morris.

The Championship side were initially cleared, but then lost an appeal from the EFL and were fined £100,000 (€117,000). Derby are also living under a transfer embargo which hampered Rooney adding to his threadbare squad in the summer.

Republic of Ireland international Jason Knight, as well as Ireland U21 internationals Louie Watson and Festy Ebosele.

The Daily Mail report that a legal agreement over subsequent punishments has been reached by Derby's legal team and the EFL.

It's expected to see Derby docked 9-points, with a 3-point deduction suspended until next season.

Derby have 7-points from their first seven games of the season, and the 9-point deduction would see them plummet to the bottom of the Championship on -2.

The Rams only avoided relegation to League One on the final day of last season.
