A Rory Patterson strike in the first half of extra-time gave Derry City a 3 – 2 win over St Pats in a pulsating FAI Cup final.
The cup win is the Candystripes’ fifth.
But it was heartbreak for the Saints who have now lost seven finals in a row and extend their 51 year wait for cup glory.
Both teams cancelled each other out in a tight first half but the game came to life in the second period.
Pat’s hit the front in the 50th minute as Sean O’Connor swung in a free-kick but Derry hit straight back through a Stewart Greacen header.
Moment of madness
But Derry went in front after a moment of madness from Pat’s goalie Brendan Clarke.
He passed straight to Derry’s Stephen McLauglin and then barged over the forward giving the ref no choice but to award a spot kick.
Patterson duly obliged from the spot with what looked like the winner.
But St Pat’s had a final say in the 90 minutes as Christy Fagan tapped in an O’Connor pass.
But Patterson got the vital goal in extra-time as he showed good strength to hold off a Pat’s defender, beat Clarke and slotted in.
