Everton have denied trying to use Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy as a make-weight in their attempts to sign Wilfried Zaha.

It was claimed yesterday that the Toffees had offered Crystal Palace 55-million pounds plus McCarthy and Cenk Tosun for the Ivory Coast winger's services.

Palace have already reportedly rejected a cash-only bid of 52-million for Zaha but Everton say those reports of a second offer are wide of the mark.

"Everton Football Club categorically denies that a bid has been submitted to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha that included an increased sum plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy," Everton said in a statement.

"Everton and Crystal Palace have a very good relationship. A bid was made over the weekend which was turned down.

"Both clubs agreed that was the end of the matter."

Former Everton boss Sam Allardyce thinks his former side will continue to try and take Zaha to Goodison Park this summer.

“I would have thought it was a possibility Everton would have tried to sign him because they’ve been one of the biggest players in the market since Farhad Moshiri got control of Everton, and it looks like they’re splashing out again this summer," he told TalkSport.

“Making an offer for Wilf is not beyond them, but whether they’ll reach chairman Steve Parish’s valuation, I’m not so sure.

“I thought the Arsenal move would have been the big one for Wilf, because he’d prefer to stay in London.”

The Merseysiders have also confirmed that Idrissa Gana Gueye has completed his move to French champions PSG.

The midfielder joined the Everton from Aston Villa in 2016 and made 108 appearances for the club.

He joins the French giants for a fee believed to be in the region of €30-million.
