Take a look at the decision of Spanish referee Muniz Fernandez to give Real Madrid a 96th minute penalty by clicking here, and judge for yourself whether it was even close to being the right call. It wasn't if you're wondering.
Pepe clearly cheated and pulled down Elche's Carlos Sanchez by the arm. Yet Fernandez somehow decided to give Real Madrid the penalty. He also made a contentious decision not to send off Real defender Sergio Ramos earlier in the 2 - 1 win.
It is not the first time Fernandez has courted controversy with strange refereeing decisions. Last night Spanish football expert Graham Hunter spoke to Joe and Dan McDonnell and went through a litany of errors made by the La Liga referee.
Here are just a sample of the errors Graham discussed last night:
- Last season during a match between Athletic Bilbao and Granada, he restarted after half time without noticing that Athletic's keeper, Gorka, had not taken to the field.
- He wrongly sent off Jose Antonio Reyes for taking a quick free kick which he himself had given permission to by blowing his whistle
- And two weeks ago he was the man who controversially ruled out a Sevilla goal against Barcelona despite the fact that a foul was not clearly visible
Graham pulled no punches when he described Fernandez as "incompetent". But there are strange goings-on within the refereeing association in Spain with accusations that Fernandez is being protected.
"What you've seen is an official who is utterly incompetent and he needs to be stripped of all his professional status," said Graham.
"Recently a former referee, who gave up out of the blue after saying he was persecuted by the referee supervisor, made some very direct accusations that the calamitous behaviour of Muniz Fernandez was being protected by the refereeing supervisor because they come from the same part of the country and that he was picked on to draw attention away from Fernandez. 48 hours after the accusations, you get Muniz' performance."
Graham also talked about the rumours linking struggling Valencia to Chelsea's Juan Mata. He believes a move is unlikely as Mata has shown himself to be a "little fighter" who will try to prove Jose Mourinho wrong.
