Look, we all know it’s 2015 and that’s the year that Marty McFly travels to in the first Back to the Future sequel. And yes, that Stephen Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis promised us that we’d be free of the shackles of gravity, carelessly dehydrating humongous pizzas and receiving faxes in every room of the house.
And no, none of that has come true.
But at least we’re getting the fancy light-up runners...
In the 1980s, sports giant Nike was commissioned to produce the special shoes that Michael J Fox wears in the movie, that sees Marty McFly travelling 30 years into the future to 2015.
The Nike MAG was never intended for mass production, but the lasting popularity of the franchise led the shoe’s designer Tinker Hatfield to reconsider. In 2011, a limited line of 1500 MAGs were sold at auction to raise funds for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Now, those kicks can go for as much as $7,500 (€6,355) on eBay.
But the iconic runners look set to hit the market again with a 2015 general release. Speaking at the Agenda Trade Show in Long Beach, Florida, Mr Hatfield would not confirm an exact date, but told the excited crowd there are “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.”
In an interview last year, the shoe designer also said that the 2015 edition would include the self-tying power-lace technology as seen in the movie - something promised by Tinker Hatfield in a cameo when the 2011 batch went on sale...
