Memorial events will take place throughout Liverpool and Sheffield this afternoon to mark the 26th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster.

96 Liverpool fans died as a result of crowd mismanagement at the Leppings Lane end of the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield as an FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was taking place.

A new inquest into the events of April 14th 1989, began in Warrington last year as the verdicts of the original inquests were quashed in December 2012.

Liverpool FC will mark the anniversary with a memorial service at Anfield later today.

Club captain Steven Gerrard will be joined by Everton captain Phil Jagielka at the service to release 96 balloons into the sky.

On Monday night, before Liverpool's win against Newcastle, a minute's silence was held in memory of those who died.
