Cavan got off to a fine start in the Ulster Championship by overcoming Armagh in the opening round.

While the Breffni County were the better team in the 1-15 to 1-11, they had a wobbly period in the second half which almost let the Orchard County back into the game.

Speaking to Newstalk Sport's Dave McIntyre and Colm Parkinson after the game, Cavan boss Terry Hyland felt it was inevitable that Armagh would rouse themsevles into battle.

"They were always going to come back because they have some class players. It was a matter of how our defence would absorb that pressure," said Hyland.

"In fairness their goal came from a mistake but our half-time lead kept us in the game because it gave us a breather."

But Cavan responded well to the pressure from Armagh, with Martin Dunne kicking 0-3 in the final 10 minutes.

"A lot of these players have a lot of belief in themselves. It was a matter of getting the ball to our forward line because they were on fire. Martin Dunne got nine points."

Hyland also confirmed that Armagh's strategy of defending man-to-man played into Cavan's pre-game strategy.

"From studying Armagh, that's the way they have been playing all year and they've set their stall out that they are going to outscore the opposition. That leaves holes at the back, it's probably where the game turned for us."
