Now that he has the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in Whiplash under his belt, what does JK Simmons make of mutterings about an Oscar nomination?
“I think mutterings about Oscars and Oscar nominations are fine mutterings, I think they should be full voice,” the actor told The Green Room.
Whiplash has been a big hit among film critics but aside from Simmon’s performance has failed to make much impact with other award bodies.
Shot over an incredible 19 days, the movie sees actor Miles Teller driven to the edge by his desire to be a brilliant drummer and impress ruthless music instructor Fletcher, played by Simmons.
The film, directed by Damien Chazelle, is described as semi-autobiographical, inspired by Chazelle’s time as a teenage drummer.
Simmons studied music in college - an experience he says helped him gain credibility among the professional musicians in the film - although he conceded he never encountered a teacher as terrifying as Fletcher.
On winning the Golden Globe, Simmons paid tribute to co-star Miles Teller calling him:
"A young actor of such maturity and brilliance that he inspired me every day to want to scream at him and hit him in the face."
