Republic of Ireland defender John Egan insists there's still a long way to go in their World Cup qualification campaign.

Stephen Kenny's side opened with losses to Serbia and Luxembourg in Group A and face Azerbaijan, Serbia and reigning European champions Portugal in September.

Sheffield United defender Egan missed those defeats in March due to injury and he feels they can improve in the autumn.

"Obviously it was far from the start that we wanted, but we are still only two games in and anything can happen," the 28-year-old said ahead of tomorrow's friendly with Andorra.

"It's going to be tough, there's no doubt about that. We're definitely outsiders now, but all we can do is to look to the next game and try to get a result.

"You never know - if you get a bit of momentum, you never know. For me, it's all about the next game.

"At the end of the day, it's a results business, we know that. We want to win games, we want to give the country a team that they are proud to support and proud to watch."
