Reports today suggest that the World No.3 has applied to Florida’s Supreme Court for a quick name change. The Times report Sharapova will revert back to her ‘normal’ name after the US Open. However, it is likely the change will have to be approved by the Grand Slam Committee and US Open organisers.
The unusual move is said to be a promotional stunt for the Russian player’s Sugarpova line of sweets. According to their website, Sugarpova “is a premium candy line that reflects the fun, fashionable, sweet side of international tennis sensation Maria Sharapova. Maria has created her own candy business to offer an accessible bit of luxury, interpreting classic candies in her own signature style.” The company’s logo is a pair of red lips, which is expected to appear on Sharapova’s clothes throughout the tournament.
Coming in varieties such as ‘Sporty’, ‘Flirty’ and ‘Smitten’, some of the proceeds from the candy go towards The Maria Sharapova Foundation, which is “committed to helping children around the world achieve their dreams”.
The US Open starts on 26th of August, and Sharapova is expected to start at third seed behind Victoria Azarenka and defending champion Serena Williams.
